As cannabis begins to be accepted as a natural medication, our culture is starting to become more open-minded to study the therapeutic potential of another natural but illegal substance — psychedelic mushrooms.
To this date, three U.S. cities have legalized psychedelic mushrooms. Ironically, those same cites happen to all be states where cannabis is legal. Over the past year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration designated psilocybin treatment as a “breakthrough therapy.” There are also a handful of doctors researching psilocybin to treat depression and addiction, among other things.
However, psilocybin is still classified as a Schedule I drug under federal law.
Unfortunately many people still associate psychedelics with media and imagery from the 1960s.
